Integrating light bulbs and tubes has importance to the vegetation and life support of aquatic animals inside an aquarium. They are deemed as artificial sources of light needed by aquatic creatures and for illumination purpose.

There are various light bulbs and tubes created for use in aquariums. They vary in spectrums, wattages and designs. There are aquarium lighting suited for freshwater aquariums such as screw- style incandescent bulbs, normal output fluorescent lighting and compact fluorescent lighting. T5 bulbs and metal halide bulbs can also be used in freshwater aquariums.
