How do use the Aquatic Gardens tank ?

My mom just bought a fish tank from a garage sale for the fish were getting soon and i don’t know how to use it. It says Aquatic Gardens on the top. It never came with a users guide or anything.
Where can i buy a filter for it ?

so you’re starting form scratch…

how large is the tank..

you’re going to need a few things…first is a filter…make sure it is big enough for the tank…..you can get this a any pet store…or walmart has nice ones that are cheap…

next is a heater….almost all fish you see in the store….except gold fish…need a heater…if its 10 gallon or under 25-50 watts..20gallon to 30 gallon need a 50-100 watts..and 35 to 55 need 150 to 200 watt…it need to be set to about 77 degrees…again walmart has cheap ones…or you can get one from any petstore…

it also needs lighting and a hood…..easy to come by

now its ready to be set up…you need a water conditioner to do this buy something that says safestart or such on it..it will remove the chlorine and heavy metals that can hurt fish..

now before you start to add fish the tank needs to be cycled…this is the natual process of of beneficial bacteria breaking down ammonia in the tank…the nitrogen cycle…
to do this there is two ways

1)fishless cycling…to do this drop a small amount of food (like your feeding one fish) in the tank everyday for the first two weeks…then add 1 or 2 fish a week..

2) cycling with fish…you need to get a few hardy fish like zebra danios…they will be able to handle the spike of ammonia that will happen..after 2weeks you can now add about 1 or 2 fish a week

remember one inch of fish adult size per gallon….

gold fish are the exception…at leste 10 gallons per fish….(very dirty)

also you may need to consider an air pump…it will help to keep the O2 levels in the tank in good standing..

Zebra Danios – Excellent Choice for your Tropical Fish Aquarium!

I started a tropical fish aquarium a few yeas ago.

Through experience, I learned that the Zebra Danio is a very compatible fish to go along with Angel fish and other types.

They come from the Eastern Part of India, and a fully adult fish gets to be about two inches (six centimeters) in length.

Although they are quite active, they have a peaceful nature, and tend to get along with almost any other type of fish in the community tank.

They will eat tropical fish flakes like all the rest of the fish. They are not particularly fussy and will tolerate almost any kind of food.

I have found that they are tough as nails, and thankfully very resistant to any sickness or disease.

Even when the tank would become quite cloudy and ugly, (like during tank cleaning) they didn’t seem to suffer at all.

Zebra Danios are perfect for those starting out in this terrific hobby, as they are prolific breeders.Go forth and multiply is an understatement for these creatures.

A unique quality is that as they are quite loyal to their chosen mate (unlike most people I know).

Mated pairs remain together for life, and rarely spawn with others, even if one mate dies. Although I never got into breeding, I learned by observing them, that they are really faithful!

I noticed that they can be ‘tail nippers” and will often chase after slower fish with elegant tails. So I would suggest you avoid the most delicate types of fish with elaborate tails!

All in all they are fun to watch, and seem to have boundless energy.

I would highly recommend Zebra Danios to add to your tropical fish aquarium, it’s very unlikely you would regret that choice.

I see a Aquarium Pharmaceutical (brand) Water Softner Pillow for 5 bucks and wonder how do you recharge it?
it says that you can recharge it. It uses this sodium thingy?

Rinse the pillow in tap water, then grab the container it came in and put the pillow back in. Fill it to the brim with water, then add 3 Tablespoons of Aquarium Salt. After 2 hours of being submerged in that, the pillow will be recharged. You can leave it in there for storage. If you threw away the container, then any container not exposed to soap will do for this. You want 7 ounces of water and 3 Tablespoons of Aquarium Salt.

Marine Aquarium white things?

Hi, I have a 37 gallon marine aquarium with 4 fish and and an arrow crab. Recently I noticed there are these weird bulb- type things growing on the glass. They look almost like a splatter where they connect to the glass, and then they look like a whit bulb- type thing. I scrubbed one off and another one grew back. They don’t move around and when I changed my last filter it was covered in them. Can anyone tell me what these are?!?!

If its white with circular center and small legs branching off then its a hydroid, these can reach nuisance proportion. If it looks like a small shell growing on the glass and when you scratch it off it breaks instead of just falls off, then its a small type of snail which cannot move. They are actually beneficial and will hurt nothing. If they get on your nerves then just clean the front glass and leave the sides and back to their own devices unless you wish to clean those also. Its difficult to keep a marine aquarium completely clean as coraline algae will grow crazy and completely cover glass, rock and equipment. I usually just keep my viewing areas clean and leave the other areas to cleaning once every few months or so to discourage so much growth. Hydroids can be a bit more of an issue if you have them. They can sting corals which they are close to and specifically have adverse effects on zoanthid colonies. If you notice some on your live rock, the only sure fire ways I know of removing them, are either to remove the rock and manually remove them, or remove the rock and apply kalk paste over the colony of the little buggers. I don’t know of a way to completely remove them from your aquarium using any specific chemical, however I have had success with scarlet hermits eating them occasionally. You might opt to try a few of them. Do not scratch them off as they will just blow to pieces and each piece will grown anew into another. I saw a few in my 30 gallon reef when I started up, however when I moved the tank and had to tear it down they all died off. Don’t tear your tank down lol that wouldn’t be a good solution. Try the hermits as a natural means and if they don’t work look at different methods. I linked a forum discussion over hydroids if these are in fact what you have. If you have the snails then there is no worry.

What fish, coral, sponge, etc. should I get for my Marine Aquarium?

I have a 90 gallon tank that I want to use for a marine aquariam. I have the filter, heater, sand, gravel, and other stuff for it. I just need to know what fish and other stuff I should get for it.

Well, what would be really nice would be if you got real aquatic plants. That way, you could have a whole ecosystem in your tank. They only cost about $3 at petsmart for a batch 3-5, the non potted ones which in my opinion are just as good as potted, you just have to plant them in a day.

As for fish, I say neon tetras, platies, betta, barbs and what would be cool would be to get at least 3 cory catfish. cory catfish are bottom feeders so will make the bottom of your tank just as interesting as the top.

My friend has dark red fishes (about 10) in a small aquarium. They’re quite easy to maintain as his aquarium is very small without any filter or erator, but these fishes seem to tolerate it well and they even breed. I just want to know what kind of fish they are because I want to buy a couple for my aquarium. They are smaller than a goldfish (just about an inch adult size) with darker red colour.

really, any small tropical fish really need filters and heaters. Your friend is lucky. ask him what the fish are called. i can’t see them to tell you. Or post a picture.

How much light I need for coral in my 50 gal tank?

I have a 50 gal tank, live rock and live sand now, gonna have about 5 fishes. would like to add some corals. how much light do i need. what is the cheapest way to get a light fixture for my tank? where can I get them at? please help

Actually, the that answer is only mostly right. The amount of light you need depends on what you are keeping and the spectrum you decide to go with depends on what you are trying to achieve. The bluer the spectrum the more color but less growth. The yellower the spectrum the more growth; but less color. Most people stay sort of in the middle with either 10 or 12K bulbs. As for actinics, that is not a must but if you run a 10K bulb which is on the yellow side of blue, the supplementing them with blue actinics provides a full spectrum and you get great color as well as good growth. SPS require a lot of light for the most part while mushrooms and some other softies you can get away with less light. IF you want to do softies and some LPS like Frogspawn you can get away with some nice Power Compacts. If you want SPS corals then you should either go with a good T5 setup or MH.

Snails in Your Fish Tank Can Be Awesome or Terrible

Snails can be either beneficial or detrimental to your tank’s plant life. But some aquarists prefer to have several species of snails in order to maintain their tanks.

Melaniodes tuberculata – his is a popular breed of snail that is deliberately introduced to the tank. What’s good about this species of snails is that they eat as much algae as the can. Aside from that, they keep the integrity of the tank by eating leftover food and dead plants that can pollute the water. Another reason why they are so popular is because they dig through the tank’s substrate, thereby aerating the gravel. Another amazing feature of this snail is its sensitivity to toxins in the tank. If it’s time to clean or change the water, the snail will crawl its way to the surface of the water.

Planorbis corneus – this snail’s favourite snack is the Hygrophila spp. Some species of Ramshorn may not be good for your tank, so observe them carefully. The bigger they are, the more risk they pose on plants. They mostly eat algae that implant themselves on the surface of plants, glass, and decorations. As with Melanoides, they dead plants and leftovers. It is not advisable, though, to put them in breeding tanks for they also eat fish eggs.

Neritina natalensis – this beautiful snail is not just there for decoration. Neritina can be quite a voracious eater of algae, which is why it is among the favourites of aquarists. It mostly eats Green Spot algae as well as the Green Beard algae.
Common predators of these snails are the Loaches and Cichlids, so make sure that your snails are either abundant or have an adequate escape hatch to protect themselves. They can also proliferate fast so closely monitor their population just in case they decide to overpower your tank.

It may be nice to put in a snail or two in your tank. Problem is, they can easily multiply overtime and take over your tank. Just one snail is capable of producing an army.

The best and safest way to remove snails in your tank is to remove them manually. Many aquarist have tried (and have been successful) in baiting snails with food such as lettuce, zucchini or cucumber. The lettuce can be pinned at the side of the aquarium, near the top. Zucchini or cucumber is best placed inside a clean bottle. Place it there during the night, and you’ll find a swarm of snails you have not seen in the morning. You can also spend some time maintaining your tank daily. Carefully look for any movement in the leaves or the gravel surface. Sure enough, you will find snails that are just hiding or munching away. Another way of removing snails is by introducing fish types that eat them. Loaches and Cichlids are perfect for eating away snails and snail eggs. Some loach types are ravenous eaters of snails and can even suck them from their shells even if they are beneath the substrate.

Introduction of chemicals such as copper can be used, but it is highly risky. Although it can eradicate much of the snail population in a short amount of time, this method must be done carefully and with extreme caution. Not only will it eradicate your snails, it will also produce some damage in your plants and fish.

Carefully consider each method of clearing up snails in your tank. If all else fails, you can totally clean your tank, flush out the substrate, and treat your plants. It is best to always treat new plants and remove the water in which your fish came in with to prevent any other unwanted snails from getting into your tank.

Swro Design and Energy Recovery Part 2: Hydropro Design

Design Requirements
Traditionally Hydropro has always put the needs of the customer into the forefront of its company philosophy. By doing this, Hydropro has always stayed abreast of the latest advancements in technology in the water treatment field. In this case, mostly because of the remote location (nearly everything, including fuel for the diesel generators, is delivered by ship), the most important customer needs were associated with conserving energy and maintaining reliability. Availability of replacement parts was also a major concern due to the remote location and the lead-time required to ship items to the island. Another concern Hydropro had to address was ease of operation and ease of maintenance, as the remote island of Ebye did not have any skilled RO plant operators. The end result would incorporate all these requirements to produce a reliable supply of potable water from a seawater source for the citizens of Ebye.

In the original RFP, KAJUR requested twin 75,000 gpd SWRO units (expandable to 100,000 gpd) designed for a seawater feed of 45,000 mg/l TDS. The proposal presented by Hydropro was for two Seawater Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment units each designed to produce 75,000 gallons per day. Permeate water was projected to be of less than 300 mg/l TDS based on feed water from seawater wells with a maximum TDS of 50,000 mg/l and an SDI of less than 3. Each unit was designed to be easily expandable to a daily capacity of 100,000 gallons by the addition of one pressure vessel containing seven seawater membranes. All instrumentation, piping, valves, headers and pumps were pre-sized to accommodate the expansion.

Each proposed SWRO system consisted of four pressure vessels containing seven membrane elements each arranged in a single, one-pass array. With the expansion, the system would consist of five pressure vessels in a single staged array. Each system was designed to operate at a 30-40% recovery rate, with a maximum trans-membrane (feed to product) pressure of 1100 psi at a feed water TDS of 50,000 mg/l. With a feed water TDS of 46,000 mg/l, the trans-membrane pressure was projected to be approximately 900 psi at startup and 950 psi after three years of operation.

System Design
The final, installed 100,000 gpd Hydropro design consisted of the following major components and unit operations for each SWRO unit:

• Sand and Particulate Filters: Two HYDROPRO Tubular filter units Model STF5M2-400- PVC/150 each consisting of one PVC housing with a 150-micron wedge wire PVC screen for the removal of sand and particles, with automatic purge valves
• Micron Filters: Three heavy-duty filter housings constructed of FRP/PVC and built to ASME Code X, the housings are Eden Model 24EFC each accommodating six (6) 40″ long five micron polypropylene cartridges
• RO High Pressure Booster Pumps: Two high pressure feed booster pumps Grundfos Model BM 17-27R (installed in series) – horizontal centrifugal, multi-stage construction of 904L Super Austenitic Stainless Steel, each driven by a 35 HP submersible type motor rated at 460V/60Hz/3Ø utilizing a Soft start motor starter and VFD RO Low Pressure Booster Pump: One booster pump Grundfos Model BM 30-4R – horizontal centrifugal, multi-stage type of 904L Super Austenitic Stainless Steel, driven by a 7.5 HP submersible type motor rated at 460V/60Hz/3Ø controlled by a variable frequency drive
• Membrane Modules: One FRP construction structural frame, five pressure vessels of FRP construction rated at 1200 psi operating pressure, 35 Thin Film Composite membrane elements ¬ 8″ x 40″, 2205 DUPLEX SS headers for feed and concentrate and Sch. 80 PVC for the permeate headers and low pressure feed, suction and concentrate piping, Allen- Bradley PLC SLC 5/04 based control system – installed in a NEMA 4X enclosure with system switches lights etc. installed on the panel door
• Chemical Feed Systems: One anti-scalant dosing system and one chlorine dosing system
• Freshwater Flush/Membrane Cleaning System

The system skid was designed and fabricated for a compact footprint due to limited installation space and to allow for shipping both units in a single container.
The entire system was pre-assembled as much as possible to minimize field services.
