Akiles Offibind 21d Plastic Comb Binding Machine Review

The Offibind 21D is the smallest plastic comb binding machine manufactured by Akiles Products. It is designed for use in the small office / home office space and with a pricetag of around $100 it is definitely worth taking a look at. In fact, the Offibind is a great example of the fact that you don’t have to pay a lot of money for a decent quality plastic comb binding machine. This article will take a quick look at the features, limitations and construction of this machine.

Features:

For the pricetag, the Offibind actually has several features that other similarly priced binding machines don’t offer. The first such feature is the adjustable depth of punch margin control on the 21D. This is a feature that is normally only available on much more expensive machines. The adjustable depth of punch control is located on the back of the Offibind and is fully adjustable. Many other machines with this feature provide between 2-4 preset settings. However, with this machine you can adjust the distance of the holes from the edge of your document in increments of just millimeters. This means that you can use 3/16″ plastic combs with this machine (something that is not recommended with other small binding machines that don’t have a depth of punch control).

The Offibind also includes three disengageable punching pins at the end of the machine. This allows it to work with letter sized paper, oversized covers and A4 paper for European formats. By default you will most likey have the number 20 and 21 pins pulled out most of the time. However, when punching longer documents or oversized covers with rounded corners the ability to engage these pins is important.

The Offibind is includes a binding punch that is capable of punching up to 10 sheets of 20lb paper per lift. It also has a plastic comb opener that is rated for use with combs that are up to 1″ in diameter. Several of the other binding machines in this price range are not capable of handling combs that are that large. With the 21D you can bind documents that are as thick as 240 sheets of 20lb paper which is adequate for most applications.

Limitations:

Although the Akiles Offibind is a great machine for the price it does have some limitations. First, the punch on the OffiBind is only rated for use with ten sheets of paper per lift. Realistically this means that you will need to keep your punching to about 8 sheets of 20lb paper at a time (or less if you are punching thicker sheets). For small proposals this is not a problem. However, for thicker documents it can become very tedious to separate your book into such small sections.

The Alikes 21D also does not have fully disengageable punching pins. The design of the machine does allow for punching of half letter sized documents (8.5″ x 5.5″) but it does not allow for the punching of custom lengths. For most users this is not a problem but it is something that is worth noting especially if you are planning on punching longer documents.

The other limitation that is of note is that the comb opener on this machine is only rated to handle combs up to 1″ in diameter. While plastic comb binding spines are available in sizes as large as 2″ in diameter this machine is not capable of finishing the larger sized books. If you ever think that you may need to bind larger sized books you might consider purchasing a little bit larger machine that can use the bigger combs.

Construction:

For such an inexpensive machine the Akiles Offi-Bind is actually very well built. Unlike other machines in its price range the Offibind has a solid metal base and all metal components inside. The housing over the punching mechanism is plastic and so are the knobs. However, this should not affect the performance of the machine at all. It has rubber feet that will keep it from slipping on your work surface and uses a strong steel handle that should be more than adequate. Plus, Akiles offers a 1 year warranty in case you should have any problems.

Recommendation:

This machine is ideal for a small office or home office that binds a few documents per week. The relatively small punch capacity combined with the inability to bind thicker documents doesn’t make it a great candidate for higher volume environments. Still, the excellent construction and small footprint of this machine make it a great choice for many organizations.

Little Giant Ladders. When Manufacturers Compete Customers Win

Type 1 Little Giant Ladder System is a new protégé of Wing Enterprises. Recent dramatic price reduction as well as increase in

warranty period from 5 years to a Lifetime makes Type 1 LittleGiant line very attractive for professionals and homeowners looking for quality,

safety, and versatility at affordable cost.

Type 1 Little Giant Ladders were introduced in the fall of 2001. Originally based on the Medium Duty/Commercial Use Type 2 they incorporate

extra enhancements such as upgraded Lock Tab Assemblies and extra riveting to meet Heavy Duty/ Industrial Use 250lb government rating. Although

an excellent ladders they always stayed in the shade of widely advertised Type 1A Little Giant Ladder Systems.

So, what happened? The keystone of LittleGiant design is the ingenious hinge assembly. As soon as the patent for it expired, almost every

ladder manufacturer came up with its own multifunction ladder looking very similar to that of the Wing Enterprises.

We- professionals with years of experience on the ladder market believe that Little Giant ladders are still unmatched

http://www.LadderDepot.com . Contractors that have been using LittleGiant for years would never even think to trade it for any other ladders in

the world. But how would you influence a first time buyer to pay higher prices for seemingly “the same” product? The answer is simple: price

and information. TV infomercials teach customers about the virtues of the Little Giant Ladder System, price policy fights the competition. For

customers it is a Win-Win situation.

Among the winners who bought Type 1 Little Giant Ladders are our “walk in” customers: General contractors, Home Inspectors, Painting

Contractors, and Homeowners – people that need compact, lightweight and strong ladder of ultimate quality and functionality. Unfortunately

on-line buyers don’t have that privilege to compare different size and duty rated ladders side by side, try to operate them and find the

perfect one. Hopefully this article helps to bring them to the winners’ team.

Final ladder shopping advice. Never take for granted that your ladder distributor utilizes the customer oriented approach. In strive of getting

higher commission customers are often persuaded to get more expensive larger and heavier models which leads to further frustration. Be a smart

one. Learn your needs, better yet try before you buy and win.

Maker Pump
Do you really need a bubble air maker?

I have bought a 90 gallon tank and have everything set up but was wondering if it is absolutely necessary to have an air pump maker? I want to get my fish saturday but at the moment its cost me over £400
yes i have a filter and loads of bubbles come out of that, also my fish love swimming in the bubbles the filter makes :)

You should keep a bubbler on hand just in case. Many medicines (mostly antibiotics that strip oxygen from the water) will almost require you to have one in addition to your filter. Also, if the water gets too warm they are useful to have to replace oxygen lost in warner waters.

Gaijin Houses in Japan Also Known as Guest Houses

Can you imagine paying 8 month’s rent just to move into an apartment? Oh, and none of it will be returned! Well if you come to Japan and want an apartment this is a fact. That is where this other option comes in “Gaijin Houses” also known as Guest Houses!

A guest house or “gaijin house” as we say in Japan is an inexpensive type of accommodation for foreigners, who stay in Japan for one month or longer, and who want to avoid the hassle and the expense of renting and furnishing a regular apartment.

Renting an apartment in Japan not as expensive as most people think. But there are many fees applied when you move in. This is where it becomes a hassle. There is the realtor fee, deposit, gift money to the landlord, and a few others thrown in for fun. Each fee is equal to one month’s rent. Therefore your first month’s rent could be anywhere from 4-10 times the amount of rent. Only the deposit will be returned…hopefully.

There are many guesthouses in Tokyo, but they are sprouting up all across Japan. Guest houses are a much better deal. With only a small deposit and no extra fees, they provide safe, clean, affordable accommodation while searching for a long term apartment or on a short term stay. They come equipped with kitchen facilities, Internet access and laundry facilities, and each room is usually furnished with a small fridge, TV and a futon or bed. Since the actual features and overall quality of each guest house can vary enormously, however, a resource like Gaijin House Japan can make the difference between a successful and a miserable stay in Japan.

When trying to find a guest house it can be a dreary task not all guest houses have great English websites. And not knowing the country well you may have a hard time knowing where to look. Enter “Gaijin House Japan!” Gaijin House Japan’s main feature is a continually updated series of articles on every guest house across the length and breadth of Japan. Allowing travelers to comment on the guest houses they have stayed in, thus providing an “in person” view of Japanese guest houses – the good, the bad, and the dirty!

Features of Gaijin House Japan include:

  • Guest House FAQ – All the common questions asked about Guest Houses.
  • Guest House Articles – Detailed articles on every guest house across Japan, including photos, videos and travelers comments.
  • Gaijin House Lounge – A friendly forum where members can talk about travel in Japan and share helpful tips.
  • 100% FREE Classifieds – Look for share-mates, roommates, rooms, and even “sayonara sales” for selling your stuff when you leave Japan or buying stuff when you arrive.
  • Useful Links - Learn even more at other recommended websites about Japan.

Decoration Pet

How to Keep Pets Safe Over the Holidays

The festive season is fast approaching and it can cause a lot of anxiety for us, but pet owners often forget that the holidays can also be stressful for animals. It is a good idea to bear in mind that there are many things that can affect a pet’s health and happiness at this time of year. Obviously, the last thing you want is to spend the holidays at a veterinary surgery with a sick animal. Subsequently, there are some things that a pet owner should bear in mind.

1. Take Care With Christmas Decorations

Obviously, you will want to cover your home with decorations over the holidays, but you should be careful to ensure that your pets cannot reach them. Chewing tinsel, Christmas lights and other decorations could cause serious injury to your animal. You may find that placing a product, such as Bitter Apple on electric wires will prevent some chewing, but it is always wise to keep an eye on any pets around decorations.

Moreover, it is not only the manmade decorations that you need to be wary of, because natural decorations, such as ivy, holly berries, mistletoe and poinsettia can all be poisonous to animals. If you plan to place any of these attractive natural decorations around your home, make sure that your pets cannot get to them.

2. Lots of Guests Can Stress Your Animal

Understandably, your home will be filled with guests over the holidays, so to ensure that your animal does not become over anxious it is advisable to have a quiet retreat for him, or her, to go to if feeling overwhelmed. Over the festive season, you may find that you have to move a lot furniture, but be warned that disruption can cause a cat anxiety, which may mean that he, or she, stops using the litter tray.

3. Be Careful What You Feed Your Animal

We all indulge a little over the festive season, but, ideally, pets should never be offered human food. Of course, it can be very difficult to refuse those pleading looks. It’s true, a small treat will not do any serious harm, but it is advisable to offer any treat in moderation. Similarly, all your guests should be encouraged not to consider your animal as a waste disposal unit. There are some things that should be avoided altogether, such as chocolate, which can be poisonous, and bones, which can splinter and cause damage to an animal’s digestive tract.

4. Christmas Tress Can Topple Over

You will find that cats are extremely attracted to Christmas trees. A cat climbing or scratching a tree can easily cause it to fall over. To avoid potential danger to your cat, you should find a way to anchor the tree, by attaching it to something sturdy with fishing wire or something similar.

5. Don’t Leave Ribbons on Gifts Under the Tree

Another danger to cats can be found underneath the tree. If your gifts are wrapped in beautiful ribbons, you may find that your cat tries to chew the gift, which can cause serious damage. Ribbon can become wrapped around the cat’s esophagus or intestines.

These are some of the main dangers that your pets face over Christmas. To ensure that your animals remain happy and healthy, you should take extra care to keep an eye on your pets during the holidays. If your animals are safe, they can enjoy the festive season with the rest of the family.

Zoanthids Zoa
Corals for nano reef? where to start?

i have a bio cube 14 gallon it has been cycled for about 6-7 weeks i have 3 black mexican turbo snails, 2 nass snails, and 1 emerld crab.. i have been testin every 2 days and do a 10-15% water change every week,. i think i am ready to start adding some type of corals. what to get first. i have added a korlia power head and upgraded my lighting. to 3 24w bulbs { 4 white and 2 Blue]

what is type is hardy enough to start with? i was thinking of getting a couple frags of Zoanthids and Paly’s and maybe get a few mushrooms to start

What are some of the type i can get and wont need to worry about feeding, like i know most Zoa’s feed on light. what are other like this
What type of flow and light to Zoa’s like?
yes i have 3- 24 watt ps lights
1-10,000k
1-50/50
1-antic blue

I would start off with the mushroom polyps and zoanthids and see how they do first. After that, try adding some leather and colt corals, euphyllias (hammer and frogspawn), or moon corals. These are all low-light corals.

Leather corals can grow huge. Make sure you prune them or they will block the light from reaching your other corals.

Despite what the people as your local fish store may say, the sweeper tentacles of large polyp stonys CAN sting you. I know, I have developed an allergy to the venom of my branching frogspawn. For your own sake, use gloves, especially if you are working around palythoas. When under stress they secrete palytoxin which, if you accidentally ingest it or it gets into your bloodstream can kill you.

Bio Filter

Sponge Filters for Use in Betta Tanks or Bowls

Question:

I am looking for a filter for my small betta tank, it is about 3 gallons. I have been told that sponge filters are a good filter here, but I also was told about under gravel filters. Also are there differences in brands?

Answer:

Sponge filters excel as small tank or bowl filters, they fit nicely in small spaces and are cheap to own and maintain. For a betta, there is no better filter in my opinion. They are excellent bio filters and good mechanical filters in small aquaria.

In fact, a sponge filter is probably the best choice of filtration for breeding tanks, Betta tanks or bowls, hospital tanks, and even discus aquariums, due to the fact that they do not “suck” in baby or weak fish or attract noxious bacteria.

These are also simple filters to clean, simply remove the sponge, rinse in de-chlorinated tap water or used tank water (to throw out after cleaning), then squeeze the sponge several times until clean (usually takes less than a minute).

Sponge filters are one of the best biological (and unfortunately most under rated) filters in the hobby that is often driven by anecdotal evidence. One myth, Bio Wheels and Wet Dry filters are superior to sponge filters is not true when one moves from theory to actual tests and evidence.

In theory the added oxygen or bio wheels and wet dry filters is great, but in practicality the channeling of wet dry filters and the deposit build up of Bio Wheels lowers bacteria surface area, while the fact remains that with the proper dissolved oxygen levels your fish should have is more than adequate for a healthy sponge filter to maintain proper bio colonies. I have performed side by side tests with sponge filters in my service business and the sponge filters out performed the bio wheels when ammonia spikes were measured.

As for under gravel filters, there are small ones made for bowls or small tanks, but they take more maintenance than sponge filters (debris tends to collect under the plate). UGFs are more difficult to clean in small aquaria, as they are best maintained by vacuuming, which is difficult in bowls or small tanks.

The brand sponge filter I would recommend is the Hydro Sponge Filter by ATI (Lustar), they hold the best patents for sponge filters and have many patent infringements to prove it. The sponge material used by Hydro Sponge can trap vastly more aerobic nitrifying bacteria (for ammonia, nitrite removal) than their nearest rival. I have used many others (including homemade) and they are not the same.

A good place to purchase these filters is American Aquarium Products- Sponge Filters .

For a more in depth article about sponge filtration see: Sponge filtration; How sponge filters work and the benefits of using sponge filters in aquariums and ponds.

CONCLUSION:

Even though Bettas are Labyrinth fish (this organ enables bettas to get the oxygen they need from the air), they still do best with an environment where they can get the oxygen from the water. Also, Bettas are just as susceptible as other fish to water parameters such as high ammonia or nitrates, which is where a small sponge filter connected to an air pump comes in. I will also note from my experience that Bettas are MORE sensitive than many other fish to lack of electrolytes in the water (the Sponge Filter does nothing for this, however water changes and/or Wonder shells.

Marine Radar

Once within reach of only the most affluent boaters, marine radar has enjoyed increased popularity due to lower prices, improved designs, and the relatively recent ability to interface with other navigation instruments such as GPS chartplotters and autopilots. Anyone who has found themselves trying to navigate through dense fog or pick out navigation lights against the cluttered background lights ashore can appreciate the additional safety factor that marine radar brings to coastal and offshore navigation. Whether interfaced with other navigation instruments or not, radar is a powerful navigation device that can be used in any situation.

How Radar Works

Radar systems are made up of a display and a revolving antenna (or scanner). A stream of short pulse radio waves are transmitted through the antenna and a computer inside the radar receiver measures the time delay of the echo received and calculates the distance to an object or landmass while the rotating scanner determines the bearing. The results are then displayed on the radar screen.

Navigating with Radar

Boaters equipped with radar can more confidently expand their cruising grounds without feeling completely at the mercy of darkness or the sudden approach of squalls. Radar allows boaters to see landmasses, other vessels, or navigational aids which might ordinarily be hidden from view by darkness or weather conditions. While rain and other precipitation considerably shorten it’s effective operational range, this sensitivity to precipitation also tends to make radar a useful detector of approaching bad weather.

Most users operate radar in the Relative Presentation/Heading Up mode because it’s the easiest to interpret at a glance. This means that the top of the display screen is always oriented with the bow of the boat, and targets on the screen are always relative to the vessel’s heading.

Another display mode, True Presentation/North Up is oriented like a chart with the boat in the center and the top of the screen pointing north. This makes it possible to observe how navigation aids move on the screen as the boat remains on its intended track. Radars with a north-up mode are usually interfaced with an electronic compass.

The latest and most versatile option is the Course Up mode, which receives navigation input from a GPS or Loran and/or an autopilot (optional). With this mode the top of the screen is relative to the rhumb line course of a selected waypoint. If the heading line of the boat drifts off the rhumb line from either pilot error or current, the resulting movement will show the XTE (cross track error), which can then be easily corrected. This mode is also ideal for avoiding collisions.

Selection Tips

Display Type

Radars are currently available with monochrome CRT, monochrome LCD, or color TFT displays. Legibility under all light conditions is the key factor in determining the best display for a particular boat. Boat size and radar location will greatly influence whether you choose a lightweight LCD display or a larger, heavier, high-resolution CRT display. LCDs are most common in cockpits and on flybridges because they show up well in sunlight, are easily disconnected and stored below, and some are waterproof. Monochrome CRTs will show better definition out of direct sunlight, but are best permanently mounted below or in an enclosed cabinet on the flybridge. However, with incredible visibility and dropping prices, the newer color TFT displays are now dominating the market.

Transmit Power

Small marine radars transmit between 2-6kW of energy, with transmit power determining the strength of the signal sent by the antenna and the corresponding echo back–the stronger the transmitter, the more likely soft or distant targets will show up on the screen. Transmit power is more important in poor weather, since fog, rain, and drizzle tend to absorb the energy and reduce radar range. Antenna height is also a factor because radar is a line-of-sight system.

Open or closed array antenna?

As a rule, the larger the antenna, the better its chances of distinguishing separate objects that are close together in congested areas. Open arrays are generally larger and found on powerboats. Closed arrays, called radomes, are usually reserved for sailboats where protection from sails and rigging is a concern.

Where to Buy

To determine the best choice of marine radar for your boat, it’s often a good idea to talk to a knowledgeable marine electronics specialist like those at MarineTech North America. They can explain the features and capabilities of a particular marine radar model and offer suggestions based on boating style and budget. MarineTechNA offers an extensive selection of marine radars and accessories. They also have a wide variety of other marine electronics such as GPS chartplotters, autopilots, fishfinders, and more

Aquarium Cleaner

What Products Should I Use to Keep My Aquarium Clean

There is no doubt that aquariums can beautify your house but since fish are living organisms the aquarium is bound to get dirty. If you are wondering “what products should I use to keep my aquarium clean” then I recommended you make a note of the following products that can help you keep your aquarium crystal clear.

The first product that can help you keep your aquarium clean is an aquarium python. This product is very beneficial during water changes. It can help you clean the water of your aquarium without any hassle.

Aquarium pythons allow you to clean the gravel in the aquarium while doing a water change without disturbing the fish. The aquarium python is a long pipe that allows you to directly fill water from the tap and also let the water out the aquarium directly into the sink. Most aquarium pythons allow you to adjust the water flow and some of these devices come with extra fittings such as a splash proof outlets to prevent water splashing when you are letting the water out of the aquarium.

It is also possible to get battery operated siphons that can help you clean the gravel and water of an aquarium. Battery operated siphons are beneficial if you have aquariums that hold less than 15 gallons water.

The second product that can help you keep your aquarium clean is a magnetic glass cleaner. Magnetic glass cleaners allow you to clean algae from the insides of the glass without putting your hand inside the aquarium. It is important to note that special magnetic cleaners are available for acrylic aquariums and regular magnetic cleaners should not be used on acrylic aquariums since they can cause permanent scratches. It is also possible to get aquarium cloth mops or other algae cleaning accessories that are suspended on a stick and help you clean those hard to reach spots.

The third and most important product that can help you keep your aquarium is an aquarium filter. Sponge filters are beneficial for aquariums that are can hold less than 10 gallons water and internal filters or hang on back filters are beneficial for aquariums that can hold up to 40 gallons water. External canister filters are recommended for larger aquariums since these filters are apt for cleaning larger aquariums with more fish. An under gravel filter is not recommended for large aquariums since large aquariums generally have a bigger fish load which can cause the plates of the under gravel filter to clog. Under gravel filters require regular maintenance and siphoning the gravel is an important part of maintaining an under gravel filter.

Glass cleaners are required to clean the external glass of the aquarium and care should be taken that the glass cleaning liquid does not mix with the aquarium water while cleaning since this can prove toxic to the fish.

The Coffee As Being The World Popular Beverage

Coffee is the worlds most popular and consumed beverage. It is usually served hot prepared from the roasted seed of coffee beans. Its popularity has given birth to many kinds of instant coffee. The word coffee entered the English way back in 1598 from the Italian word “caffa” via the Turkish word “kahveh” through the Arabic word “qahwa”. The ultimate origin of the word is uncertain there being several legendary account of the origin of the drink.

Coffee is such a drink which is liked by all people irrespective of their age or geographical location. Coffee is made either hot or cold. The cold preparation of coffee is as popular as the hot one. You can have your coffee with or without milk or simply with some whipped cream to make it sinfully delicious.

Coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world next to petroleum. The popularity of coffee can also be judged by the rising number of coffee pubs and cafes all over the world. People of all the age groups can be found hanging at such cafes enjoying their cup of coffee. In the morning, in the afternoon or in the nights the coffee house business does not stop.

Many researches have shown that coffee reduces the risk of a number of diseases and ailments like diabetes, gall stones, cirrhosis and many more. Coffee forms the chief source of stimulant caffeine in the human body. The good and bad effects of coffee are still being researched on. A cup of coffee, when you are really down, can make you more alert and boost your power of reasoning. Anything, including coffee, when taken in moderation does not have an adverse effect on your health.

Like cocoa and banana coffee is a tropical export that is produced almost exclusively in the rain forests of the developing world, but is mainly consumed in the wealthier nations. Fortunately more and more coffee drinkers are demanding that their favorite baristas serve coffee that is grown in a manner that protects and not destroys the rain forests.

Did you know that the farmers all over the world harvested 7.4 million tons of coffee in 2002 , an all time high , and almost double the amount harvested in 1960. It is also remarkable that one out of every five cups of coffee worldwide is consumed in the United States. Meetings are held, proposals are discussed, marriages are proposed, deals are finalized, and a lot more happens over the magical cup of coffee or java.

Zoo Live
Did Steve Irwin hunt at all? Also, where did he live in Australia Zoo?

I have Google Earth and I know he lived within the Zoo but I can’t see any place with a house within the Zoo grounds. Also, I love animals, I want them to continue with preserving them but I also like to hunt. Kind of like the Aborginals of his land and the Native Americans of my lands. It is more of a respect, just a qucik kill and know toturing them at all. I know Steve ate meat so I am just wondering. Thanks.
I am NOT killing for pleasure either. I like to hunt for my food if I can.

Very few Australians hunt. We do a lot of fishing and some people enjoy going after feral animals like rabbits, pigs, goats, buffalo, camels, donkeys etc but that’s about it. Duck hunting has been banned in some States and is temporarily on hold in others because of the drought. You need a licence to kill any native animal and apart from duck hunting, these are only granted to professionals.

Steve Irwin probably shot a few rabbits in his time but hunting isn’t big in Australia. People who take pride in killing animals unnecessarily are considered a bit odd.

Aquarium Fishes

Freshwater Aquarium Fish Alternatives

There are stress relieving hobbies which we can start on to revive our stressful day.  Freshwater aquariums are a good option to revive our tired senses from the day’s work and are gaining much popularity nowadays some even have a number of aquariums at home, schools, restaurants and entertainment plazas.  They give us a different relaxing presence when you walked and gazed into the room.  Good freshwater aquarium fishes are added attraction to the cozy ambiance of the aquarium filled with clear clean water inside.  Raising an aquarium business entails a lot of preparation and as a beginner into this kind of practice there are a lot of things to put into consideration aside from the fish tank and the fresh water are the types of fish choose from.

Fish’ General Well Being
It is a must to consider a number of essential things when raising a fish not only its physical appearance but its total well being as well. Though physical appearance of the fish is important but it should be strong and sturdy also to withstand the changing aquarium conditions especially during the start up cycle.

Choose fish that can feed on a variety of foods and can be easily fed too.  This is a great help especially for those newbie in terms of aquarium set up.  In this method beginners are guided to easily fed fish themselves during regular intervals efficiently. It is suggested to get fish that can easily adjust to other varieties so that they can move freely inside with a variety of companions thereby preventing any harm amongst each other.  Separate those aggressive ones from the weak group to prevent them from bullying each other thus no harmful things can be done.

Different Fish Types
There can be good types of fish to choose from for our fresh water aquarium but these are the common classifications of fish such as:

Catfish
These are probably the most common types of aquarium fish regardless of function and appearance. Generally they don’t have the scales which other fishes have and mostly identified as the usual bottom dweller stereotype.  A number of fish falls into this kind and are widely known because they can be easily fed except for few nocturnal feeders.  Be mindful of the number of substrates you use so as not to irritate the fishes as they move around the fish tank from time to time.

Cichlids
These types of fish are commonly found in Asia, America and Africa and are one of the few good picks for freshwater aquarium because of their varied features.  They have great skin colors and can adapt to environment changes easily but they can become hostile at times especially to small fish there for should be separated especially during the hatching seasons.  Angelfish is a good cichlids type of fish because they can mingle with others without posting any traces of harm to the young fish. Proper tank conditions are one of the great factors for a lasting fish existence.

Labyrinth
Fish that are quite adaptable to other species, small in size and are the prime choice for professionals. There are fighting fish as well which can make troubles with any other types of fish picking fights at times especially with the males of the same species.

Cypriniforms are low-maintenance when it comes to socialization with other fish as they can go with almost all of the other species together. Some of the fish under this category are considered as the most well known fish among the fresh water aquarium lovers namely koi and goldfish.

Skimmer Net
What is the roll of blue heavy plastic for that came with my above ground pool?

I just had the pool installed and in the accessory box was the vaccuum, skimmer net, thermometer, and a roll of heavy plastic that is approximately 4 inches wide. What is this for?
It is a flat roll of heavy blue plastic that is approx. 4 inches wide and 20-30 feet long.

that is actually a drain hose it’s not a sheet. you use that to drain your pool, or to back wash the filter so water doesn’t go flying everywhere.

Tank Water

The Advantages Of Setting Up Underground Water Tanks

The Benefits Of Setting Up Underground Water Tanks

Water tanks happen to be a word of mouth recently because of the lengthy durations of drought and water shortage encountered all throughout Australia. Rain hasn’t been this valued and envisioned just before; water tank planning and installations have been considerably increasing over the past years as a counter in order to the prolonged season of drought and increased water bills.

Since you have bought your very first water tank (well done), installation should be simple. However, if you are planning to place the water-catcher gear below the floor, there are various points to consider before that water container goes into functioning.

The availability of space is one essential variable to decide in case you put the water tank below the ground. The very reason why many people prefer an underground water tank system is because it will save them some useful space. While rains and extreme warmth and cold may adversely affect tanks installed above the ground (they might even be subjected to catching fireplace or will get wore lower by heavy showers as well as strong wind gusts), weather changes will not be an issue when your water tank is positioned below the ground.

On the bad side, below the ground water tanks will require pumping in order to extract its water stored because of the unusual positioning, and this would mean added costs for you (e.g. electrical power). Also, detecting malfunctions as well as leaks is going to be difficult ought to trouble occurs underground and tree origins can pose a significant threat to your underground tank’s framework as well as polluting the stored water.

Choose between steel, wood, concrete, fiber glass and polyethylene (poly) for your water tank’s material. Shapes can be purchased in various forms (spherical tanks are much preferred all over the globe because it can hold a sizable quantity of liquid).

Laying the water tank below the ground is tantamount to burying it entirely, and thus weighing just about all the options as well as taking just the best choice is crucial – you don’t want the tension and cost of literally excavating the ground open since you found out your own water tank’s materials was not proper underground or it had been placed improperly.

In the event that you will indeed experience problems with the container below the ground, do the correct thing and phone only the experts. It is important to do some background information or even research prior to allowing any licensed organization (or personnel) to start work on fixing your own underground water tank. Or if you’re able to, ask for references through previous customers to have an understanding to the genuine thing.

Underground water tank extraction and installation is a very complex and potentially precarious business that should only be carried out by experts; only a single error of managing the elimination of an underground water tank could grow out of control into a large costly situation.

You may find yourself plagued with decisions bordering the installation of your own water tank below the ground, but remember to refer these decisions to the considerations such as the size of the water tank, the number of consumers, the environment where you live, exactly what or where you can use the stored water, as well as the space you are able to allot.

Industry experts should be contracted to do the installation. Never make an effort to do it on your own if you’re not really, in any case, associated or have expertise in order to the industry – or endure unimaginable consequences.

The guys from Action Tanks can help you have easy and quick water storage tanks installation beneath the ground. They are doing the delivery of the water tank and they will also do the installation (flawlessly) for you. You don’t want to be satisfied with anything less with regards to water tanks, not to mention the procedure for setting it up below the ground. So start reading, compare, and decide regarding your water tank set up today.

Bar Lights

LED bar light – The most effective warning light our emergency services have

A dark road in a rural setting on a rain lashed night is a very dark, scary and hazardous place. Now imagine that road with a road traffic accident and emergency vehicles. The first thing you will be aware of is the wash and glow from the lights up ahead. If those lights weren’t there then your journey would be far more dangerous and possibly fatal. The LED bar light units on most emergency vehicles serve as advance warning of problems we need to be aware of and take action to avoid. The thought of a road traffic accident is bad enough but one that is inadequately lit is a further accident waiting to happen.

There has been some research into lighting used at roadside incidents and accidents and surprisingly too much light is a bad thing. Where there are several emergency vehicles and personnel in attendance there will be a huge amount of lights of every description from light boards advising traffic, to the LED bar light units that most of the vehicles will have. All of that lighting can have the opposite effect of what is intended which is that people pull over to adjacent lanes away from the accident.

In research at lighting at nighttime scenes, a vast amount of light produced a drift effect and drivers instead of steering clear were drifting towards the scene. That is often called the ‘moth’ effect, which is when moths are drawn to light. Too little light would mean people aren’t aware in time that there is a problem and won’t slow down enough to pass safely. Lighting is crucial in such circumstances but it has to be at the correct level and saturation, so the use of LED bar light units needs to be appropriate. Road users need advance warning so they can act in a timely and appropriate way to what they are seeing.

There are times when we may not hear the siren of an emergency vehicle for various reasons, however, there is no mistaking the powerful flashing of an LED bar light on a vehicle in your mirror or up ahead. Speed is always a dangerous thing on the roads yet our first response teams have to speed to get to emergencies every day. Drivers that don’t see or hear the approach of an emergency vehicle are a danger, that is why as much lighting, and noise as possible is sometimes needed. A speeding vehicle with flashing LED bar light units and a siren can only be doing one thing and that’s racing to someone’s aid.

Our modern vehicles help keep us cocooned in our little bubbles and we can blissfully unaware of what is going on around us on the highway. Music, children, phones, DVD Player noise and general apathy leads to careless distracted driving and that is extremely dangerous. The statistics for fatal road traffic accidents are horrific and a high percentage is caused by careless distracted driving. Take note of what is around you, drive with caution and use your full set of senses to ensure you are fully aware. You will hopefully not see any flashing LED bar light in your mirror but if you do you can react quickly.

Turtle Aquariums: A Turtle Tank Set Up Differs From A Fish Tank!

The home of your turtle is referred to as the housing or habitat, one of the vital necessities of your pet. There are two main types, namely indoor, referred to as a turtle aquarium, and outdoor housing, often a garden pond.  Although the indoor enclosure has similarities with the fish aquarium, it is not the same. Novice turtle keepers should keep this information in mind.

One of the most important differences between the two is the water level containment.  Fish are aquatic creatures surviving in water alone, while turtles need both land and water. For this reason, fish tanks are filled completely with water, while turtle tanks are only half filled. Different turtle species require their own precise amounts of water according to their size, and these amounts must be accurately calculated and rigorously maintained. Watch your turtle – it should have a high enough level of water to enjoy swimming, but the turtle should also be able to stand in some shallow areas of water, and have a rock or log to climb out and bask on to dry off.

When purchasing a turtle aquarium, make sure that you consider the size your turtle will grow into as an adult. Turtles normally grow three to even four times their infant length as they mature. Therefore, the most ideal aquarium size for your pets is three to four times the length or size of the biggest turtle. The tank width must be twice as large, and the height should ideally be 1.5 to two times its length. Furthermore, choose a tank which is eight to 12 inches above the highest point the turtle can reach in order to prevent it from climbing out and escaping.

When buying turtle tank accessories,  make sure that the welfare and safety of your turtle is prioritized. Never consider placing any rough stones in the aquarium, for they may potentially injure your pets. Select smooth stones instead. Stones which are found on roadsides must be sterilized before placing them inside the tank. All other store-bought accessories should be cleaned every week to ten days. An easy way to stick to your cleaning schedule is to take out and disinfect the accessories when you change your tank water.

Create an elevated place to allow your turtle to bask, either by piling smooth rocks or aquarium gravel on one side of the turtle tank. Other materials to use to create or enhance this basking area are Styrofoam™ or floating cork, to improvise a bridge or plastic raft. The other side of the tank should be used for swimming holes.

A proper filtration system is likewise a necessity.  When you make sure that the cleanliness and sanitation of the tank are maintained, you insure the health of your pet. An ideal power filter, which you can submerge in the water, is recommended. This submersible filtration system makes use of foam as the means of filtering. Rinse the foam using cool and clean water every week.

The purchasing and setting up of the turtle’s aquarium are the most important tasks for beginner turtle keepers. Make sure that before you acquire a pet turtle, you are ready to give it proper housing the moment you bring it home. Remember, the best habitats for turtles are the ones that meet their daily needs by mimicking their habitat conditions in the wild. Your turtle needs space, soil, plants, food, water, and proper temperature control to ensure a long and healthy life.

Gravel Cleaner

5 things every aquarium owner needs

1. A gravel cleaner
An aquarium gravel cleaner is probably the single most useful thing you can buy for your fish tank. These gadgets allow you to remove dirt-laden water from out of your aquarium gravel and can keep the substrate spotless and the tank sparkling clean and free of nuisance algae.

Although you can buy electric gravel cleaners, such as the Aquarium Systems Hang On Vac or the Eheim Battery Vac, it’s often the most simple gravel cleaners that work best. The Fluval Easy Clean Gravel Cleaner is one of the best, and it costs just £6.19 from www.swelluk.com. For something you should use every time you do your weekly partial water change, that’s great value.

2. Test kits
A lot of fishkeepers can think of aquarium water test kits as an optional extra, but they’re actually really important, particularly in the early stages of aquarium ownership. You’ll definitely benefit from ammonia, nitrite and nitrite kits during the cycling stages, but a pH kit is also a must, too.

You can buy aquarium test kits individually or save money by purchasing a master kit which includes several. The API Liquid Freshwater Test Kit is a good one and includes enough reagent to last you a very long time, even with regular testing.

3. Great advice
With so many aquarium fish species available and so much to learn, it’s important that you get good impartial advice from the start. Forums can be an excellent source of information, but one of the most consistently reliable is the UK magazine Practical Fishkeeping whose experts tell it how it is, have oodles of knowledge and keep well up to date with the latest trends.

4. Patience
You’ll quickly go wrong if you’re the impatient type. The early weeks of aquarium ownership are also the most complicated and if you get duff advice or add fish before your tank has been cycled you’re going to be in for trouble. As are your fish. Take things slowly to start with, cycle the tank the modern and ethical fishless way and don’t add any fish until your test kits show that the water is pollution free.

5. Dechlorinator
Chlorine is added to our tapwater to kill bacteria and make it safe for us to drink, but this chemical and the related compound chloramine, will also kill your friendly aquarium filter bacteria. If the bacteria are killed off, your water quality will quickly deteriorate resulting in sick fish. Thankfully, it’s dead easy to remove chlorine and chloramine using dechlorinators or water conditioner such as Tetra Aqua Safe.

Ornament Plant
How many Mountain Minnows and apple snail?

OK so i have a 30 litre cold water tank with live plants ,ornaments, good filtration and aeration and a light and lid. I was wondering how many mountain minnows can i put in the tank would 9 or 10 be ok . I also wanted an apple snail but will i have problems with the eggs with just one or do they need a partner to produce eggs

Hmm…I don’t really like putting mountain minnows in anything smaller than 40 liters. I suppose 7 or 8 would be alright, though.

Snails are hermaphrodites, but they still need a partner to produce eggs. Getting only one snail will prevent babies.

Cichlid Fish

General Info About Cichlid Fish

The Family Cichlidae , which our cichlids come from is an extremely diverse family and cichlids inhabit a multitude of different environments. The different cichlid species have developed in order to fit their own specific niches. Cichlid species because of this, differ in size, the way they feed, character and their ability to cope with water conditions

Aquarists usually divide the cichlid species into three main groups

*African cichlids

*Central and North American cichlids

*South American cichlids

The largest known cichlid species can reach a size of 50 to 100 centimetres. This can be compared to the smallest cichlids, the dwarf cichlids in the Apistrogramma group that never grows larger than 3 centimetres.

These small cichlids can actually benefit from a larger aquarium, since it is easier for the owner to keep up the water quality in a big aquarium with plenty of water. Another interesting fact is that cichlids have teeth in both the upper and the lower jaw and in the throat!

You will find the most popular cichlid species are

*Jack Dempsey

*Discus

*Angelfish

*Oscars

Cichlids are a member of the order Perciformes which posses two pharyngeal bones forming a triangle which is located in the throat. Some varieties actually possess teeth in their throats.Cichlids are categorized as secondary division freshwater fish. This info tells us that the ancestor of todays cichlids were marine fish.

At some point in history they have invaded and somehow successfully adapted to the freshwater environment. All cichlids are egg layers and can be placed into two general catigories in regards to their reproduction methods. One group will brood their eggs in their mouths, usually performed by the female.

The other group will lay their eggs on some sort of substrate like a rock, some wood or even on the sand. Some species will abandon their hatchlings at birth and others will nurture their young for several months then abandon them.

Cichlids are found in many tropical and subtropical areas of the world. From southern Texas southward through Central and South America to the northern regions of Argentina and southern Uruguay. They can be found on many af the Caribbean islands. Then there is

*Africa

*Syria

*Israel

*Southern Iran

*Madagascar

*India

*Sri Lanka

To date there is some 1,900 species known and described to man, with many scientists beleiveing there there could be just as many still to be discovered. They continue to be discovered at a growing rate, and there is at least 20 new varietys found described every year.

Plants Fish
Fish tank that has fish and plants, pH is level high and plants are decaying.?

We just set up a 55 gallon tank that has fish and plants. The fish had fin rot, which is cleared up now. But the pH level will not go down. We have tried “Correct pH” and “Start Right” made from Jungle. The plants are turning yellow (even after putting plant food in the tank) and decaying. Any suggestions to what we need to do next?

These are symptoms of an un-cycled tank. You should always choose fish and plants that match your tap waters PH. Malawi Chichlids thrive on high PH. It is more important to keep a STABLE PH rather than a fluctuating PH. Trying to change the PH can stress the fish and the plants. Plants need at least 8 hours of light per day to live. If they are dying, make sure they have enough light and that the bulb is strong enough.

Bio Pond
Can you help me design an experiment for my bio class?

I need to design an experiment to find out why some ponds at a fishery get infected with a certain bacteria and some don’t but i don’t know how to do that. PLEASE HELP

One necessity for good pond health is aeration. Aeration is having oxygen delivered throughout the pond.the bacteria that will thrive will be aerobic bacteria. Sludge and muck slowly decompose at bottom of pond and this decomposition increases anaerobic bacteria and releases toxic gases. Some bacteria is beneficial for good pond health.

For a low cost experimen:
Supplies: Microscope and two slides Two rounded glasses or small fish bowls Two posters and markers.
Preparation: 1) go to a ‘stale’ pond (no incoming or outgoing water) and 2) take sample, including the muck & leaves at the bottom; then, 3) create a ‘living’ pond with good water clear taken from a good pond, clean rocks, a water plant, and a fish. 4) On one poster draw each type of pond and the bacteria that will thrive in each. 5) Make several numbered slides of an example from each type of pond and record each type of bacteria. 6) Do your homework and identify each bacteria as anaerobic or aerobic.
Presentation: Two ways. Make this interactive: let everyone see if they can identify the right type of pond. Class presentation. Describe the steps used for this experiment.
