Cleaner Siphon

How to Siphon Leads From the Internet Like a Turbo Charged Vacuum Cleaner

Lead generation online is perhaps the most important purpose of a web site. For any type of business to succeed, it’s essential for it to have an effective lead generating web site. Following are some useful lead siphoning tips:

1.SEO Optimization:

Remember, it’s the ‘keywords’ that visitors enter while searching for a particular piece of information. Unless your web site gets a higher search engine ranking, chances are that visitors may never know about your website. To get a high search engine ranking and maximize your lead base, it is essential for you to optimize your content spread throughout the Internet. For this, you need to insert suitable and relevant keywords and phrases in the title and body part of the articles.

2.Don’t brag:

Customers visit your web site to check whether your products or services are useful to them. Avoid bragging about yourself as it can only annoy the visitors. Instead, let your visitors know that you understand their needs. Inform them how your products or services can benefit them.

3.Keep your customer information form short and simple:

If you’re asking your visitors to fill certain forms, ensure to only ask for information that is really essential. You need not ask them to write everything from their names to shoe-size. The more questions you ask, the lengthier the form will be and this may irritate your visitors. Remember, conversion rates are directly proportional to the amount of details you ask for. Hence, prefer asking for only basic information such as name, address and email address.

4.Provide Contact links clearly:

If you want your visitors to contact you, you need to provide them with contact links.

By following these simple tips, you can easily siphon Internet leads like a turbo charged vacuum cleaner.

Stone Ceramic

Ceramic and Natural stone tiles used on Floors

Ceramic Tiles have been popular for years and now come in a wide variety of colours and designs; ceramic Tiles are extremely strong and durable and make great additions to both kitchen and bathrooms floors, although they can of course be used on walls also. Ceramic floor tiles are very cost effective in comparison to other tiles and will add real value and style to any kitchen or bathroom. If used on floors it will almost certainly be advised to seal, sealed tiles are then protected from any stains, spillages or accidents. Sealing of the tiles will last quite a few years before it may need to be done again but the advantages are huge.

Ceramic Tiles are also great for areas where there is moisture and they are of course easy to clean and maintain which is vital in areas such as kitchens and bathrooms. Ceramic Tile designs vary hugely and there will almost certainly be a tile that suits your personal preferences and the existing decor.

Natural stone tiles are also a great tile for floors in kitchens especially; some home owners also opt for natural stone tiles in the bathroom area where they will add both elegance and style.  The advantages of natural stone tiles are plentiful; they are an incredibly durable tile which makes them ideal for busy areas where there will almost certainly be spillages, knocks and accidents. Natural stone tiles are also very easy to clean and come in a range of materials. Limestone and marble are both popular materials although marble will work out more expensive in comparison to other natural stone materials.  Other stone materials include travertine, sandstone and slate and all these materials are all considered suitable for the home.

Some stone materials are porous and for this reason they will almost certainly need to be sealed to maintain the tile. Some stone materials will also require different installation to others and you can obtain this information from all good tile suppliers who will also be able to advise installers should you decide to have the job done professionally.

Natural stone can also be used on walls but there are certain materials that may not be suitable for this area because of the weight of the stone and again you will need to get the best advice on the most suitable stone tiles for particular areas.

Natural stone tiles and ceramic tiles make great additions to any kitchen and bathroom and done properly will certainly last the test of time.

Bulb Esu
Porcelain socket dome lights?

I found a bunch of dome lights in my garage (brrrrr) and wanted to know how to I tell if they are porcelain socket ones? Both say max wattage is 250 watts and the socket is white. Is is safe to say they would be able to be used to the ESU coil UV bulb?

Yes you can. The esu Bulb only uses 20W’s and doesnt get very hot at all. I use them for my baby painted turtles and pigmy cham. They are great buldbs and cut back on the light bill.LoL They dont produce ALOT of UV but do the job for the smaller guys. They also dont heat up so they can be used on porcelain or non-porcelain lamps. I use the $5 clamp desk lamps from walmart for my ESU bulbs and have never had a problem.

Hope this helps……

Vacuum Cleaner
Does a Danoz Direct vacuum cleaner pick up bowling balls?

I have a broken arm and I recently purchased a new vacuum cleaner that I saw advertised on the television. There is a bowling ball on my loungeroom floor and no one is home to move it away. I bought the vacuum cleaner because on TV they said that it has enough suction to pick up the ball. Is this true?

Water Filters

Not Using a Drinking Water Filter? You Could be Drinking Chlorine, Lead, Pesticides, Drugs and Even Human Feces

If You’re Not Using A Drinking Water Filter, You Could Be Drinking Chlorine, Lead, Pesticides, Drugs And Even Human Feces.

The caliber of our drinking water has been continually falling. Our government has turned a cold shoulder to the problem. They proceed to pour chlorine into our water supply, brush aside industrial pollution, and neglect to address the latest menace to public health: prescription medications oozing in to our water system. Drinking water filters are now a necessary item for all.

You need to know what you and your family are consuming when it comes to your water, and how to keep your water safe by using a quality drinking water filter. The human body contains almost 60% water, and you need to ingest about 6 glasses of water to maintain optimum health according to the Mayo Clinic.

Every part in your body needs water – the problem is that most people are not feeding their system with safe, clean drinking water. If you’re not using a drinking water filter you need to know some things that may be hiding in your water: Chlorine, Sediment and Rust, Prescription Medicines, Industrial Waste, and Human Feces may all be contained in your tap water. Drinking water filters help combat this problem.

This minute many cities are trying to bring reclaimed water into the public drinking water supply. That may sound like a small thing until you realize that reclaimed water is the waste that is going down your toilet. The system in place to separate the water from the human feces include the use of chemical sanitizers. Some cities in Southern California alone with around 6.5 million people drink from regional water supplies partly treated with reclaimed waste water.

By contrast, drinking water containing human feces is a little risk to your health when compared to the more serious substances, and toxic elements found in your public water supplies shown here.

Chlorine is used in city water systems to get rid of very small organisms in your water. The problem with this is it’s poisonous While it’s better than having harmful organisms in the water, it is not safe to have it in your water. According to the National Cancer Institute, those who use water with chlorine in it have a 90% increase in the risk of many forms of cancers. Rust & Sediment

Sediment and Rust. Even if your local water treatment facility could remove all of the pollutants from your drinking water you would still have a risk to your health. If you were to go down into your basement, open up one of your water pipes, and peek inside, you would almost be sure to find sediment, lead, and rust accruing on the inside of your water pipes. There is also the possibility of pollution coming from the pipes that transport the water from it’s origin into your house, which you can not control.

The Los Angeles Times reported in it’s January 30th 2007 edition that medical prescription drugs are now showing up in all the water systems in the highly evolved areas of the world. Drinking water filters are a must with medicines such as steroids, Valium, and other medicines showing up in every glass of water you consume.

It’s a scary thought, and to make matters worse there are no regulations from the government prohibiting any of these medicines from being in your water.

Nearly 15,000,000 (fifteen million) gallons of oil seeped into the ground below a New York neighborhood. Even with residents showing a disproportional.amount of people found to have cancer, and and after a class action lawsuit was filed against the oil companies that were liable, the spill has not been cleaned up fully to this day. Industrial waste and pollution is a major problem.

It’s nearly out of the question to get rid of all the pollutants in your city water supply. Using  drinking water filters is a must in today’s world. Shouldn’t you and your family seriously consider the benefits of a quality drinking water filter?

is it important to add salt to a cichlid aquarium”?

I have had cichlids for a long time but have never used salt in my tank. My fish breed and seem to do just great nut I was wondering if the salt increases their life span or intensifies their colors? I have recently purchased dainichi cichlid food and it really has brought out more color in my fish. I just wanted to know if the salt might increase color too and why?
PS I have a my aquarium is between 220 and 240 (yes thats right, it is very large lol) gallons how much salt would that use and what would the approximate cost be per month?

Awesome tank! I wish you would post or email me some pictures! Salt is great for getting rid of ich or for dipping to remove parasites, but in an established tank that is not haveing problems, I wouldn’t worry about it. It won’t help the colors, it mainly helps with parasites and osmosis. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

Hydrometer Aquarium
Saltwater Aquarium Guide?

ok, so i’ve probably read every single forum, list, care sheet, and website written in the past 10 years on saltwater aquariums and every single one of them says something different, so here is MY question and please do not answer unless you own or help maintain a SW setup. Ok for starters i have a 45 gallon tank with a light hood SO FAR. I plan on buying a Protein skimmer, 2 power heads, a test kit, two 20 gallon heaters, hydrometer, salt, and water purifier, and the women at the store said the best filter would be a Fulval or Cascade i think? (what do you think about a filter?). But now for my real question is it all worth the money? Im only sixteen and will be using my (well basically my life savings for this) How much time/money will it take to maintain weekly and monthly? give me all your advice please….A FOWLR AQUARIUM
i really want to get a dwarf lionfish and puffers

I had a 60 gallon hexagonal tank that came with an under-gravel filtration system and heater.

I did not need (well… I didn’t USE) a protein skimmer, power heads or a water purifier. I just let nature take its course and didn’t have any problems. I started my tank by filling it with city water straight from the tap. Cycling took several weeks.

Then again, I didn’t have any live coral in my tank either!

After initial setup and cycling, maintenance was next to nil because my plants and animals took care of everything. When I had to replace water lost due to evaporation I simply used distilled water. When the hydrometer indicated that my saline level was off, I would adjust by either adding distilled water a little bit at a time (to lower the salinity) or by adding distilled water with a lot of salt in it a little bit at a time (to increase the salinity.)

Saltwater fish can be VERY expensive!
Ever think of a tank without fish?
(Anemones, filter feeders, mollusks, crustaceans, etc.)

Having a saltwater aquarium can either be addictive or a real pain in the a*s depending on your mindset. I found it to be addictive.

Aquarium Filter
What type of aquarium filter should i buy?

I am going to buy a 10 gallon aquarium and put a chinese algae eater, 2 male swordtails, 1 male and 1 female dwarf gourmis, an albino rainbow shark, and 2 nerite snails. The aquarium will have a 5 inch bubble stone and a 15 gallon air pump. The aquarium will be heated to 78 degrees. There will be no live plants. I am leaning towards getting an aqua-tech 5-15 gallon box filter, but im not sure. I have heard alot of good things about bio-wheels. Im completely lost over wut kind of filter i should have. You guys always like specifics, hope that was specific enough, lol. Thanks for any answers!

Aqua-tech filter should be fine, they are just a cheap filter but I have one in with my cichlids and it works well. The only problem with them I find is there is no flow regulator to turn down the current which I like when I am keeping bettas.Make sure what ever filter you decide on the cartridges are easy to get in your area.

Bathing Beauty
Does this beauty idea sound reasonable or not?

So I will be working out all winter and eating healthfully (ugh) so I can be more toned and more fit for the summer. I decided I need a motivational piece to this so here is what I was thinking. If I get my ideal body I will buy myself:

- A manicure
- Spray Tan
- A Pedicure
- A New Bathing suit top and bottom
- Legs and Armpits waxed
- Brazilian wax

How much will all this cost?

It depends.
-Manicure can cost anywhere from $20 to $50, depending on where it’s from and what type.
“spa” manicures are a lot more expensive than the regular manicure.
-Spray tan will probably cost $30
-Bathing suit top and bottom could cost anywhere from $40-$400
-Legs and armpits waxed will probably be around $100-$150 for both
-Brazilian can be anywhere from $30-$70

Assuming you stay relatively cheap, this will all probably cost under $300.

Tank Heater
Can I Use a Repti Therm Under Tank Heater When There’s Water In The Tank?

I just bought a Repti Therm Underground Heater for my paladarium. It says not to use it when there’s any water in the tank. Is this just a precaution? It seems like it won’t be a big deal. Let me know.

be careful that you dont slow cook your critter… under tank heating is great, but with water everything gets heated and soggy- sometimes even encouraging bacterial overgrowth. better to heat dryer areas with reptitherm, as they do not conduct such extreme heat like water does. good luck

Resun Aquarium

A Clear Pond; Proper Pond Maintenance, Filtration, and Chemistry

Keeping a clear pond in the warm or hot summer months involves these key ingredients for proper filtration:

[1] ADEQUATE WATER CIRCULATION AND MOVEMENT.

A general principle (not a rule) of about 50-200 gph per 100 gallons can work for this (A lower proportional gph for large ponds, a higher proportional gph for small ponds). This can be achieved with more than one pump and even a large aeration device (air stone). As for the air stone, I find they are excellent for vertical circulation, often better than water pumps of greater gph. A large double air pump such as a ReSun 9603, Million Air 600, Whisper 800, or Maxima with two air stones can circulate at a rate up to 500 gph. A way to check this is to place the air stone down a narrow PVC tube or aquarium lift tube, then place the top of the tube just above the water level and measure the rate the water fills up a gallon container (one gallon in 15 seconds= 240 gph).

A good water pump is the Via Aqua 2600, 3300 or 6500 hydrant pump. Both have sealed electromagnetic motors and ceramic shafts.

[2] GOOD FILTRATION.

I prefer pressurized pond filters such as the “Clear Stream” for their efficiency and ease of hiding in the ground. But there are many excellent filters available.

For small ponds (and even medium-large), large sponge filters are excellent bio filters and reasonable mechanical filters. They are inexpensive, easy to service, and simple to attach with either a power head pump or and air stone. There now is a specific Pond Sponge Filter called the”Hydro-Pond” there are two models; one air driven, one pump driven. They are useful up to 1500 gallons and more can be used for larger ponds or in combination with other filters.

Bio falls are also excellent pond filters. I do not recommend the old style Becket or Pond Master Submersible filters; they clog easily, are hard to service, and are not efficient filters. Multiple types of filtration are also excellent, such as a pressurized filter- bio falls combination, or a pressurized filter- sponge filter combination.

[3] PLANT FILTRATION (Often called Veggie Filters)

This is a very important part of pond keeping and filtration. A well planted and diversified planted pond is VERY important for clarity, pond and fish health, and even fish breeding. Any plant with a good root structure that grows fast and has the majority of their leaves above water is a good candidate to start with. I recommend water iris for their strong root structure, fast growth, great nutrient absorption, and a great place for baby fish (fry) to hide feed and grow. There are many other excellent plants as well such as bull rush. Make sure these types of plants (plants with roots in water and leaves above) are planted in an area of good, but not strong water movement. This ensures that they will do their job as plant filters.

Other plants such as lilies and hyacinth are excellent for nutrient removal too, but not at the rate of iris and similar plants. They are useful for shade, which will slow algae growth

[4] UV STERILIZATION.

Although not always necessary in a well planted, well shaded, well filter aquarium; they are still very useful. UVs help with algae control, disease prevention, and the Redox potential (which is important for fish health and proper filtration). For the UV to properly function in a pond, the flow rate should not exceed 20-45 gph per watt of UVC. In larger ponds with high flow rates I recommend more than one UV sterilizer, with a by-pass from the main line, connected in PARELLEL not in line together. For this reason, I also do not recommend the popular filters with built in UVs, as the flow rate is usually too high to work properly. A separate UV is always best! For more information about proper UV sterilization and how it works please visit this site; “WHY USE A UV STERILIZER”

Many times I have heard of complaints that their UV did not help with algae control, when I checked this client’s pond, I found inadequate filtration and an improperly installed UV sterilizer. Even a properly installed UV Sterilizer cannot over come poor filtration and a poorly planted pond. And many manufacturers make claims of high flow rates that are impossible for proper contact time.

[5] CLEANING (proper chemistry):

In a healthy pond, with a properly functioning nitrogen cycle, water changes can be minimal. I still recommend a water change of 10-20% per month on a healthy, fully functional pond. In a newer pond larger and more frequent changes may be necessary.

If your pond has a KH below 80 ppm and a pH below 7.0, I would first look to possible causes. One common one is the buildup of organic mulm on the bottom of the pond. The decomposition of this will produce nitric acids which will affect the pH and KH. Since most pond keeper have koi or goldfish, this is important to note, as both these fish do much better at a pH above 7.2 and need the calcium provided by the KH for proper osmotic function. See “Proper Calcium, Magnesium and KH in Aquariums” for more information about Calcium KH, and GH.

If a lot of leaves fall to the bottom of the pond vacuuming them or raking them out is important to prevent organic buildup.

Water changes also will help with pH and KH if your tap or well water is slightly alkaline and has a KH above 80 ppm.

A final note about KH, if your KH is below 80 ppm you will NOT have a healthy pond in the long term!

For much more, please read my vastly expanded Pond article with links to even more resources as well as pictures: A Clear Pond; Pond maintenance set-up, chemistry, filtration, predators and much much more.

Coral Salt
do you have to have crushed coral in a fish only salt water tank?

I am doing a fish only salt water tank and was wonder-ing if i had to have crushed coral in it to make it so were i could put fish in it? if i am going to do a salt water fish only tank, waht kind of stuff can i put in it besides live rock, reef , coral ect? can i put reguler rock in it? like the big rock’s that come from mountain’s and stuff that they sell in stores, or like the rock’s in your back yard? rock’s like that. or can i have plastic/silk plant’s in the salt water tank? anything else you can put in a salt water fish only tank?

The Substrate you use can be crushed coral, agronite, even fine sand All will work for you. Their are tanks that have bare bottoms but their filter systems can handle the load called Mudd Filters, A mudd system can be very expensive to set up.

The Rock.. You want what’s called Cured Live Rock. The rock in a SW tank is coral rock not rock from your garden. The reason it’s called “live rock” is the beneficial bacteria living on/in the rock. It also adds mineral to your tank that your critters are going to need. The more rock you have the better, but not so much your fish can’t move! lol Live rock also helps to filter your water so it stay clear and balanced. I had 200lbs of rock in my 55

Plants … if you want plastic plants you can just as long as you keep them clean.. Actually plastic might put stuff in the water you don’t want! Silk might be a better choice.

Salt mix… there are many different brand of salt mix… I lie Tropic-marin.

I could go on and on but here is are a few links that might answer you questions.. please check it out and other sites BEFORE you set up Get a book and read up on what you want to keep in your tank. You’ll be so much happier and so will your critters if you do it right the 1st time!!

Bio Sponge
How can I replace a bio-filter cartridge for a Aqua Tech filter?

I got a used aquarium from someone. The aquarium came with a filter. The filter does not have any cartridges in it. How can I replace those. I know that you aren’t supposed to change them after you start an aquarium, but where can I find a set to put in the filter to start with? It is the kind that hangs over the side of the aquarium. What should I do? Does a sponge act the same way as a bio-cartridge? I already have the carbon filter cartridges to put in it.

The carbon cartridges filters out most waste, but the biofilter is designed to host bacterial colonies to break down organic waste. You could probably get one from their website or a local pet store. Sponge filters should work just as well as they function both mechanically and biologically.

Waterproof Aquarium

Aquarium Silicone Applications; Which Type of Silicone Should be Used

SILCONE BASICS:

Silicone rubber is a unique synthetic elastomer made from a cross-linked polymer which is reinforced with silica. Its characteristics are such that it provides a balance of mechanical and chemical properties useful for bonding glass aquariums (not acrylic).

The basic formula is: Me3SiO(SiMe2O)nSiMe3

RTV Silicones are the silicones commonly used for glass construction and is often sold in Home Improvement and Pet Stores (or online)

RTV Silicones consist of polydialkylsiloxane with terminal hydroxyl groups (groups made up of an oxygen atom and a hydrogen atom connected by a covalent bond), which are reacted with organosilicon (chemical compounds containing carbon silicon bonds) cross-linking agents. This operation is carried out in a moisture-free environment and results in the formation of a tetrafunctional structure (A chemical structure that possesses four highly reactive sites). Curing takes place when materials are exposed to moisture. Atmospheric moisture is sufficient to trigger the reaction, and thickness should be limited if only one side is exposed to the moisture source. Curing is also relatively slow, reliant on moisture ingress into the polymer which produces Acetic Acid vapors.

Different formulas and (combined with temperature and outside humidity) will affect cure time. Dow Corning and GE have proprietary formulas that cure at an even slow rate as compared to some cheaper formulas, especially used in construction where this is not an important factor.

100% RTV Silicone Rubber Sealant produces a flexible, durable weather resistant seal between similar and dissimilar materials; RTV Silicone provides excellent adhesion to tile, glass, porcelain, ceramic, fiberglass, non-oily woods, plaster, painted surfaces, metal, many plastics, and rubber. It will withstand temperature extremes from -60°F. to +450°F. and is waterproof for freshwater or saltwater use.

You will note that plastic (which is made from oil) is not mentioned. RTV silicone is not useful for bonding acrylic aquariums and the oils within acrylic will eventually cause peeling away (lack of adhesion).

AQUARIUM APPLICATIONS:

RTV Silicones are useful in the construction of glass aquariums and sealing the joints in DIY wooden aquariums. Silicone is NOT useful for acrylic aquariums as it will peel away over time due to the inherent oils in plastics.

Not all silicone formulas are the same, as stated earlier, Dow Corning and GE produce a RTV silicone that cures at an even and slow rate necessary for aquariums. Why is this important? Too fast a cure will not allow proper surface adhesion especially in important seams. It is also hard to work with in building aquariums and the person needs to work very quickly (usually too quickly) for proper aquarium construction.

Also you want to purchase pure 100% RTV Silicone as many (including ones produced by Dow Corning) have other ingredients for different applications such as fiberglass.

A good example of a silicone you do NOT want to purchase is Dow Corning Marine Sealant which I have actually seen recommended for aquariums! This product is great for fiberglass hulls of boats however it lacks the proper strength for aquariums due to added ingredients that allow for adhesion to plastic.

SUMMARY:

Can you easily purchase the proper silicone at a Home Improvement Store? The answer is yes, just do not purchase anything other than 100% Pure Silicone (color does not matter) and I strongly recommend brand loyalty has there are good reasons behind GE and Dow Corning patents. To be safe, if you are unsure of the silicone you are buying, don not try and save a few bucks at the local hardware store when your local Pet Store or Aquarium Store have the correct product for maybe a few dollars more (unless an exploding aquarium in the middle of the night is your idea of excitement)

Small Pellet
How can make make a cheap remote-controlled shooting range for a small calibur(or pellet gun) backyard range?

Was looking for a possible electronic or pneumatic solution

Attach pullies to two seperate trees using bungee cords. Run a continuous loop of 550 paracord through the pullies. Now you should have a setup like and old fashioned city clothesline. Take a clothespin or an office binder clip and attach your paper target to the bottom rope. Shoot away and reel it to you when you’re done!

Lamp Bulb
why are there fumes coming out of my desk lamp bulb?

I bought and replaced my desk lamp’s bulb today and I noticed there were some fumes coming out of where the bulbs is located. I used a 27 W CFL Replacement Bulb. Did I install it wrong or something?
my old light bulb was also 27w fluorescent bulb as well but I never noticed fumes coming out.

If you touched the bulb with your fingers, instead of using a cloth to hold it, you most likely got some of the oil on your skin on the bulb.
It should burn off with no harm done. But, sometimes it can cause a bulb to burn out premature.

Tank Stand
How to transfer a full fish tank onto a fish tank stand?

Well, I want to move my 70L tank to a fish tank stand/cabinet.

Do I need to empty some of the water into the buckets? And what do I do with the fish without stressing them out?

How would I go about it?

Thankyou
Dan

Leave the fish in, drain about 70-80% (or more, but leave enough for the fish to be able to move around comfortably) of the water into buckets (don’t worry the fish will be fine in 20-30% of water for a minute or two), pick the tank up (or ask someone stronger to do it), put it on the stand and add the water back in.

Aquarium Light
aquarium light?

i recently set up a 7 gallon tank for a few tropical fish however it didn’t come with a light because of its size. ive been looking in pet stores for lights, but they are either too big or too small, so ive been using my desk lamp (halogen light), i was wondering if this is harming my fish or my plants..? =S and also..the tank is in my bedroom, if my lights are on in my bedroom for 12hours will that count to the fishtank…or does light only affect the tank when it is directly overhead the tank? the light in my bedroom is white by the way
thanks~
ohh and the tank shape is panoramic so thats why smaller lights which would usually be ok for 7 gallons don’t really light up the whole tank

Actually the best light for your tank if you don’t have live plants in it is the room lighting. This is because it won’t heat up the water, it will majorly constrain algae growth, and the fish themselves don’t depend on the aquarium lighting for health. Of my 3 freshwater tanks, the only one that gets aquarium lights on all day is the planted one – the two others only get the aquarium lights on when I’m actually home to view the tank – otherwise room lighting does the trick and I don’t need to battle algae. The halogen lamp will be fine for shorter periods and if it’s raised high above the water – otherwise you may consider the investment of a small flourescent lamp.

Setting Up and “Cycling” Your Aquarium

Setting up your first ever aquarium can be a daunting task. Whether it’s a goldfish starter kit or a giant tropical tank, if the same rules are followed it can be a walk in the park.

It is vitally important when getting any new pet to make sure you understand the needs and responsibilities they require to live a full and happy life. Keeping fish is no exception. The most important factor to remember when starting out in your fish keeping hobby is that your new pets are living in an environment that is un-natural and different to our own. The fishes environment is essentially its home, play area, bedroom and even toilet.

The Nitrogen Cycle

When an aquarium is first set up it has to go through a maturation process which we call the “Nitrogen Cycle”. This is a process of building up two main types of good bacteria in your tanks filter system which will keep the water clean and free from pollutions.
When a fish goes to the toilet, the waste that is produced is Ammonia. This waste is highly toxic to fish if allowed to build up. The first bacteria that colonises your filter is “Nitrosomonas”. Millions of these bacterias get to work consuming the ammonia and convert it into another chemical, Nitrite. Nitrite is slightly less toxic than ammonia but if left to build up in the aquarium it would soon become toxic. So the second form of bacteria to grow in your aquarium is called “Nitrobacters”. This bacteria consumes the nitrate in the aquarium and converts it into harmless nitrate. Nitrate must be dilluted by doing regular water changes as it can contribute to algae growth.

There are two main ways of going through the “Nitrogen Cycle”. The first way, after treating your water with a water conditioner to remove all chlorines and chloromines, is by adding a few hardy fish that can with stand the changing water conditions during the cycle and use these fish to feed the bacteria with ammonia. It is advised top use a bacterial supplement product such as Waterlifes bacterlife.

The second way is to use a synthetic ammonia additive to feed the bacteria and leave your tank fish free. This can take longer but will put less stress on your fish and is a more ethical way of maturing your tank.

The full process of the nitrogen cycle can take anywhere from 3 weeks to 8 weeks depending on your tank situation and how you choose to mature your tank. It is advisable to test your water regularly either at home or by bringing a water sample in store to be tested for free.
