I have some brine shrimp eggs, and I want to hatch them. However, I don’t have any marine salt. Can I just use table salt?
I also don’t have an aquarium light or similar. Can I use a desk lamp instead?

Do you have any other suggestions on hatching artemia?

You can use non-iodized table salt. Desk lamp will do the trick.
The upside-down soda/pop bottle hatchery is probably among the best.
You do need to keep aeration going to keep the eggs in motion. Turn off the pump when ready to syphon the shrimp at feeding time.

Hemorrhoids, often known as piles, are enlarged and engorged blood vessels in or around the anus. These may be associated with pain, bleeding, itching and feeling as if a lump or bump is hanging down. If a hemorrhoid at the outside of the anus gets a blood clot in it, it leads to a particularly tender, hardish lump.

There are many different symptoms. You may notice a pain or ache around the anus and lower rectum, which can be really quite severe. There may be bleeding from the anus. This will be bright red blood, not usually mixed in with the motion, but often seen on the toilet paper. There is often a feeling of something coming down, or a bulge or lump at the anus.

Hemorrhoids are very common. They are said to be more common in countries where the diet has traditionally been more processed and low in fibre. The main contributory causes are those things that cause us to raise the pressure in the abdomen. This causes the blood vessels to swell and become engorged.

It seems that the people most at risk of developing hemorrhoids are those who have more causes for raised abdominal pressure, such as: (1) Those chronically straining with constipation. (2) After or during pregnancy. Here, the baby may actually press on the main blood vessel that returns blood to the heart. (3) Overweight people. (4) People with heavy lifting jobs.

Hemorrhoids are very common and will occur anyway. Hemorrhoids are more likely to develop in individuals who eat insufficient dietary fiber and don’t get enough exercise, which can lead to repeated episodes of constipation and straining to have bowel movements. You can often prevent hemorrhoids by preventing constipation.

Most episodes of trouble from hemorrhoids come and go quite quickly. If simple measures do not help or the problem is lasting, keeps returning or worsening, then you should see your doctor, especially if you have any other associated symptoms eg weight loss; change of bowel habit; slime in the motions; darker, changed blood mixed in with the stools.

How Much Aquarium Filtration?

I have a new 29gallon tank for my daughter and she want Mollies and Cardinal Tetras, and I was wondering which filter I should get. I have the Imagine w/ surface skimmer already but its made for a 55gal and it seems that the flow pushes the fish around constantly and the filter pads hardly have any carbon in them. I was wondering should I use the Imagine filter since its more than enough filtration or should I get this canister filter. Any suggestions?

Keep the one you already have. Increase the water level in your tank so the water output from the filter doesn’t make a lot of noise and won’t go as deep in the water.

Don’t get the canister filter. It’s flow rate is only 80 gph and is recommended for a 20g tank, while yours is 29g. I would only use that canister one in a 10 gallon or less.

To lessen the water flow even more, you could add a pantyhose like someone suggested or place a sponge on the base of the output to add more mechanical filtration and still weaken the flow.

Why is my fish tank filter making so much noise?

i recently bought a fish tank, with 2 small fish. i followed the instructions for the purification of the tank water, filter was working fine, let the fish adjust to the tank, everything was good. The filter was making no noise except the splashing noise of the run off.

After cleaning the sides of the tank after a tank plant went manky, the filter has been making noise. The filter itself has three sections, chemical biological and physical sections i guess, i’ve also recently replaced the physical section ( a white sponge) and that appears to be clean.

any solutions or suggestions as to why this is occuring would be appreciated!

If a filter is making noise, its probably something clogging the intake or another part of the filter. Turn it off, and clean it out. Replace all the cartridges (except the bio) and if it runs smoothly, then it was just a mineral clog/particle or whatever. If it is still making noises, make sure you cleaned it out good, then it is probably just mechanical failure/malfunction. Take it to the manufacturer/store and get a replacement.

Aquarium Snails – Pets or Pests?

Have you ever suddenly looked into your fish tank and noticed a bunch of little black things crawling around which, upon further inspection, revealed themselves to be tiny little snails? You probably wondered where the heck these things came from and what you should do with them. It’s most likely that these little aquarium snails have hitched a ride in an aquarium plant you recently purchased and, while these can be terrible pests, there are other types of snails that can be quite beneficial to your fish tank as well as fun to look at.

The tiny snails, are most likely Pond snails which reproduce very quickly and have a voracious appetite for your aquarium plants. You may find literally hundreds of the snails in your tank and they will eat your plants quite quickly reducing them to nothing more than sticks.

While the pond snail isn’t really much to look at, the apple snail, one of the most popular types of aquarium snail, is a lot more fun to have in your fish tank. These snails are actually the largest snails and can grow to be 6 inches in size. There are several species and while some of them do eat aquarium plants others do no, so if you are shopping for a snail you want to be sure you get ones that do not eat plants if you plan to also keep plants in your aquarium. The apple snail comes and a bunch of different colors including yellow, blue and brown.

Another type of snail for your fish tank is the Ramshorn snail. This snail has a shell that is curly like the horn on a ram. The snails do reproduce quickly and like to eat aquarium plants so they may not be a good choice if you want have plants in your tank. The Ramshorn snail comes in an interesting checkered pattern as well as plain black and plain red.

If you do want to keep aquarium plants and are also interested in getting a snail for your tank, you might consider a Trumpet snail. These guys rarely eat plants and prefer to forage around in the substrate eating the debris off the bottom making them beneficial fish tank inhabitants as they can help to clean the bottom of the tank. While you might see the trumpet snail clinging to the glass of the tank just below the water line in the morning, you most likely will not see them out and about during the daylight as they prefer to hide and then come out at night to eat.

You can keep snails with most other community fish including Tetras, Danios, Guppies and White Cloud Minnows, however there are some fish that simply do not get along with snails so you’ll need to ask the clerk at your pet store if this snail will get along with the fish in your tank. If you do have those pesky little snails and want to get rid of them, you might try adding a Clown Loach to your tank is they love to eat snails and will happily seek out every little one of those pests and devour them!

What kind of flexible plastic is safe to use with water in a fish tank?

I am building a wet/dry filter for my fish tank and the design requires flexible plastic tubing, but i don’t know if some plastics or anything coating flexible plastic tubes is harmful to fish. So i am just asking what flexible tubing i can use for my filter.

I would only use the clear plastic tubing sold at the fish store for something like a wet/dry filter. It is cheap and made for use with live fish.

SPS corals and calcium!?

I have a 55 gallon tank with great water quality, filtration, protein skimmer, live rock and sand, 416 watts of t5 lighting. I do water zoanthids changes every 2 weeks and all of my coral is thriving so far. I only have softies like mushrooms, ricordea,, and a kenya tree. I want to move onto lps and sps coral. Must i dose calcium if i only plan on having 2 sps corals. I want a birdsnest and a montipora cap. With my lighting, water quality, and water changes could i keep these 2 sps coral without dosing calcium. I use instant ocean salt mix.

I would get a calcium test kit to see how much calcium you have in your aquarium right now. more than likely you will need to dose calcium unless you do very frequent water changes. I have 2 lps coral and need to dose calcium every 2 weeks. your calcium will need to be in the low to mid 400′s to keep lps or sps. so I suggest you see where your calcium is now before deciding to get any hard coral.

On the other hand, ground mounted solar arrays require fairly precise foundation setup, are more susceptible to theft/vandalism and excessive snow accumulation at the bottom of the array.

Next are top-of-pole mounts which are relatively easy to install (you sink a 2-6 inch diameter SCH40 steel pole up to 4-6 feet in the ground with concrete). Make sure that the pole is plumb and mount the solar modules and rack on top of the pole. Top-of-pole mounts reduce the risk of theft/vandalism (as compared to a ground mount). They are also a better choice for cold climates because snow slides off easily.

Side of pole mounts are easy to install, but are typically used for small numbers of solar panels (1-4) for remote lighting systems where there already is an existing pole to attach them to.

Last but not least are the solar trackers, which increase the daily number of full sun hours and are usually used for solar water pumping applications. Trackers are extremely effective in the summer time when water is needed the most. In the northern U.S., typical home energy usage peaks in the winter when a tracker mount makes very little difference as compared to any type of fixed mount (roof, ground or top-of-pole). In this situation, having more solar panels on a less expensive fixed mount will serve you better in the winter than fewer modules on a tracker. However, if you are in the southern U.S. and your energy usage peaks in the summer, then a tracker may be beneficial to match the time of your highest energy consumption with a tracking solar array’s maximum energy output.

What is a good pond fish that will reproduce like crazy?

i have 4 huge ponds in my backyard, that i built, and was wondering what was a fish that would have ton of babies that would grow up fast and have more babies. cause they might die in winter so i want to have a ton in teh summer.
the ponds are all connected and with rinning water in all of them. also what kind of gold fish.
there are no fish in the ponds right now.

Goldfish.

In ponds every spring they usually have the average of 75 fry. They eat them , and may get caught in the liner.
So , put them in a fry tank quickly.

Oranda goldfisn are very pretty , I know a lady with 8 Oranda goldfish that are 6 years old in a pond and have 70+ fry each spring.

You don’t have to keep just goldfish in your pond , try Koi as well. I don’t know much about them breeding but I hear they DO breed. You can’t expect any fish in a pond to breed all the time , usually once a year or twice depending on the species.

Think about what lighting effect you want to achieve, as this will influence the types of fitting you buy and where you install them.

At the front door, and on the patio, you will probably want a decorative fitting (or two) that looks attractive by day and by night. The style is a matter of personal taste, and there is a wide range to choose from.

Elsewhere, function will be more important than looks. For example, cheap bulkhead fittings are ideal for side paths, garage approaches and so on. The one type of fitting to avoid, unless very high levels of illumination are absolutely essential for security purposes, is the 500-watt floodlight mounted high on your house wall. It is far too powerful for most domestic settings, and its glare merely annoys neighbours and passers-by.

Should you still wish to install floodlights, look for models that help combat light pollution. Then decide how to provide power for the new lights. The easiest option is to take fused spurs from power circuits since you can connect th spur into a socket outlet or near an outside wall and take it straight through the wall to the light position.

You can connect the spur cable into any socket outlet that is on the main circuit and is not itself supplying a spur- in other words, one with two cables present. You cannot connect it to an outlet that is itself a spur, with just one cable supplying it.

If you decide to extend an existing lighting circuit, use the upstairs one which you can access in the loft. You can then drop cables down the outside walls to the light positions. You would have to lift carpets and floorboards to get at the downstairs lighting circuit – a degree of disruption that may not be worth the effort.

Check that extra lights will not overload a lighting circuit. Each can supply a maximum of 1200 watts. A high-wattage floodlight could easily cause an overload and blow fuses.

The reason many believe that the betta bowl is the perfect size is that these fish are territorial and when in the wild will stay in their small little area and not explore the rest of the stream. However, a small betta bowl does not really give your fish room enough and certainly does not allow you to watch your fish swim and explore the tank.

If you plan to use a betta bowl, be sure the bowl can hold at least two gallons of water per betta. The fish should also be able to have access to the top of the water so they can receive enough oxygen.

The main thing to remember is that your fish is not really a decorating item such as a vase or picture. All those vases, glasses, and other items you find stores using to sell their bettas is not the proper environment for your fish. If you want a vase with water, a pretty fish, and a water lily on the top of the vase, then you need to purchase a fake fish, as a live fish will never be happy in a vase or small glass.

Yes, in their natural environment, some betas happen to live in about one inch of water or less and even found in rice fields where they barely have enough room to turn, but the betas you purchased at the pet store goes way back in its ancestry before you will find a relative that lived in this manner. The fish you purchased has been domesticated and his ancestry is in most cases found in pet stores. For these fish, a betta bowl will just not be quite large enough.

Life as we know it, no. Life as we don’t know it, difficult to tell. It would have to be based on a system of interactions that are very different from ‘us’. Physical systems that can develop that level of complexity could exist on much shorter or longer timescales than we can currently relate to. Electromagnetic interactions, gravitational systems, particle mass/energy conversions… we would be hard pressed to find out what we would be developing the tools to look for. Not to mention the tools. Short answer, possible, but difficult to prove.

so i removed the old sump pump under the basement floor,which stopped working.?

the new one never shuts off, when i checked, the pipe coming from the pump was hot, so i shut it off. should i return the pump for another one, or is there something i should do. there’s very little water. after it being off all night, when turned back on, it’s on for maybe 6 or 7 seconds, then off,then 1 minute, back on, and so forth.
come to find out, this pump comes on every 2 1/2 minutes for 5 seconds to feel for water, if it’s there it pumps. this pump is from hell. it’s on all the time to check if it needs to be on. i’m in the process of finding better pump, that only comes on when needed. thanks so much for the input, checked all that you’ve pointed out. your all so helpful and smart. all the answeres were best.
